Answering a written parliamentary question, Malatsi said the matter is currently under consideration through the Draft White Paper on Audio and Audiovisual Media and Services and Online Safety. Malatsi was responding to queries on whether the growing podcast industry would fall under the regulatory oversight of the Independent Communications Authority of SA.
“At present, podcasts are not regulated under the Electronic Communications Act,” Malatsi stated, noting that policy developments are ongoing to address the increasing influence of this medium in the country.
The announcement comes as podcasts continue to gain popularity in SA with audiences turning to the platform for news, education, and entertainment content.
