South African (SA) Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, says the request by the Broadcasting and Media Implementation Team for an extension to finalise the SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) funding model was due to ongoing consultations with key stakeholders and disruptions caused by the festive season.
This follows the department’s appointment of the team in September 2025 to develop a sustainable funding model for the public broadcaster.
The original deadline of December 15, 2025 has now been extended to February 6, 2026.
Malatsi has further indicated that the process also involves engagement with, and presentation of the proposal to, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.
The proposed SABC Bill is intended to introduce a new funding framework for the public broadcaster, which currently relies primarily on advertising revenue.
