The 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup has arrived, bringing the excitement of the world’s biggest football tournament to millions of South Africans.
As fans across the country rally behind their favourite teams, the SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) says it is committed to ensuring that every viewer and listener can be part of the global sporting spectacle.
In a landmark move aimed at promoting accessibility and inclusion, SABC Sport has introduced live sign language interpretation commentary and analysis throughout its World Cup broadcasts.
The initiative is designed to ensure that deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences are able to fully engage with the tournament and enjoy the expert insights, discussions and match analysis that accompany each game.
SABC says the addition of sign language interpretation reflects its mandate as a public broadcaster to provide equitable access to information and entertainment for all.
Football supporters will be able to follow the action across multiple platforms, including SABC 1 and SABC 3 television channels, the SABC Plus streaming service, as well as various SABC radio stations broadcasting in different official languages.
The broadcaster believes its comprehensive multi-platform coverage will allow audiences from diverse backgrounds and communities to experience the tournament in a manner that best suits their needs.
