Malawi and fellow Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states have adopted a crucial report on the political situation in Madagascar, while approving the deployment of a regional goodwill mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to bolster peace and stability.
The decisions were finalised on Monday during an Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Organ Troika on Politics, Defence, and Security Co-operation, which was hosted virtually by Malawi.
The SADC summit has urged Madagascar’s transitional authorities to maintain human rights, foster conditions for free, fair, and credible elections, and guarantee an inclusive, democratic transition over the next two years.
Delegates noted that adopting this report reaffirms SADC’s dedication to a peaceful transition in Madagascar through constitutionalism, dialogue, and democratic governance.
The report itself was presented by former Malawian President Joyce Banda, who is currently leading the Elders Council’s diplomatic mission to Madagascar.
Her briefing highlighted progress toward restoring constitutional order and facilitating active dialogue among key stakeholders.
In his closing remarks, Malawi’s Second Vice President, Enock Chihana, confirmed that the summit also endorsed proposals to dispatch a high-level Goodwill Mission to the conflict-affected eastern region of the DRC.
