SADC delegates gather in Maputo to tackle climate disasters and resilience funding

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat is set to play a leading role at the upcoming inaugural International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in Africa, opening in Maputo, Mozambique.

Led by Dr Judith Kateera, SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Corporate Affairs, the regional delegation will join Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, who serves as the African Union Champion for Disaster Risk Management, alongside hundreds of policymakers, experts, and financial leaders.

The conference, running from October 13 to 15 under the theme “Scaling Proactive Governance and Strategic Investment for Disaster Risk Reduction and a Resilient Africa,” comes as extreme weather events such as prolonged droughts, floods, and cyclones increasingly threaten regional food systems, infrastructure, and economies.

SADC officials are scheduled to headline critical technical discussions, including sessions on leveraging the SADC INFORM Subnational Risk Index for risk-informed decision-making and transforming systemic drought risks into sustainable resilience dividends across the region.
