Programme Manager for “2gether 4 SRHR” at the United Nations (UN) Population Fund, Richard Delate, has emphasised the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
“2gether 4 SRHR” is a joint UN Regional Programme that brings together the combined efforts of Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS, UN Population Fund, UN Children’s Fund and the World Health Organisation to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of all people in Eastern and Southern Africa (SA).
SA is hosting a high-level meeting of Health Ministers from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Sandton, Johannesburg, as the region confronts persistent health challenges. Delate further explained the significance of creating a strategy to address these issues.
“The aim of the sexual and reproductive health strategy is really aiming to improve the sexual and reproductive health of all people in the SADC region. So it’s looking at issues of paternal mortality, it’s looking at issues of unintended pregnancies, access to family planning, HIV, gender-based violence, sexual health in general. So it’s looking at all of that. The strategy has four key pillars. The one is around leadership, the second one is around ensuring access to universal health coverage, there’s one around strengthening monitoring and evaluation of data, and the third one is around partnerships.”
