EU, UNDP and SADC partner in Botswana to expand sustainable finance access for regional SMEs

The Southern African Development Community (SADC), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union (EU), has launched a major initiative to establish a common regional approach for identifying sustainable investments across member states.

The rollout began with a regional workshop in Gaborone, Botswana, aimed at designing the SADC Common Framework for Sustainable Finance Taxonomies. Backed by EU funding through the Sustainable Finance Advisory Hub, the framework is designed to help governments, commercial banks, and international investors easily evaluate whether economic projects meet agreed environmental and social criteria.

Rather than imposing rigid, uniform rules across the bloc, the framework will serve as a voluntary guide. This approach allows individual countries to tailor their policies to national development priorities while improving transparency, boosting cross-border capital flows, and directing funding toward critical sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience.

Addressing delegates at the launch, Dr Yolanda Sabino, SADC Director of Finance, Investment, and Customs, emphasized that regional cooperation is vital to ensuring consistency among national strategies. Meanwhile, Maxwell Gomera, UNDP Resident Representative in South Africa and Director of the UNDP Africa Sustainable Finance Hub, highlighted the importance of translating sustainable finance policies into tangible development benefits and improving financial access for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The initial phase of the framework will focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation, targeting key economic drivers including energy, extractives, agriculture, transport, and water management. Officials confirmed that the initiative will now move into drafting national and regional consultations ahead of final validation by member states.
