South Africa’s (SA) Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region needs the six month HIV injectable, pre-exposure Lenacapavir drug more than any other region.
The region has the highest levels of HIV prevalence globally.
Motsoaledi was addressing the media on the sidelines of the two-day joint meeting of the SADC Health Ministers currently underway in Johannesburg Gauteng Province.
Motsoaledi commended the countries like Zimbabwe which has rolled out the injectable.
“Many African countries are looking forward to launching Lenacapavir, I have read in the papers that Zimbabwe has already started, and many of us are going to follow. And Lenacapavir is a gamechanger in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
As you know, it’s going to be given to people who are HIV-negative so that they remain negative. And as such, it will tell you that SADC needs it more than any region in the whole world.”
