As Southern African leaders concluded another Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, the focus is once again on regional integration, peace, security and economic cooperation.
But critics argue that for ordinary citizens across the region, they receive little changes.
They say unemployment remains stubbornly high, public services under pressure, corruption continues to undermine development, and civic freedoms are increasingly under threat.
One of those voices is Solomon Mondlane, who is calling for what he describes as a “parallel citizens’ conversation” across SADC, aimed at restoring democratic participation, accountability and human rights in line with commitments already contained in the SADC Treaty and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
