Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat, together with the Resilience Initiative Africa (RIA) programme implemented by the German Government through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, carried out a technical mission for the INFORM Subnational Risk Model in Nacala, Mozambique, from February 6-9, despite the postponement of the planned workshop in Maputo.
The mission brought together international partners including the United Nations Development Programme , World Food Programme , MapAction, the African Union Commission, CIMA Foundation, Google, Kobo, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies from Malawi and Mozambique to review regional risk analysis and preparedness measures.
The INFORM Subnational Risk Model, designed for the entire SADC region, provides detailed provincial and community-level risk insights to guide humanitarian and development planning. Delegates were welcomed by the Southern African Development Community Humanitarian and Emergency Operations Centre Director, Dr Anderson Banda, who highlighted the Centre’s role in coordinating regional responses. Participants also toured the Situation Room, one of three across the region, to see the technology used in disaster management.
With recent flooding in Mozambique and South Africa, and Tropical Cyclone FYTIA in Madagascar, the mission shows SADC’s commitment to strengthening early warning systems, enhancing preparedness, and improving coordination across the region. The team also reviewed ways to refine impact-based forecasting and strengthen interoperability between Situation Rooms to better respond to future hazards.
