Political scientist Dr David Matsanga says Ghana’s suspension of citizenship applications for people of African descent allows the government to reassess the framework and put in place safeguards to ensure the process is fair and transparent.
He pointed out that the move is important for balancing diaspora engagement with domestic stability.
The suspension comes after authorities identified fraudulent claims and tensions arising from attempts by members of the African diaspora to reclaim ancestral lands. According to Matsanga, the pause provides an opportunity for Ghana to tighten eligibility criteria, prevent exploitation of the system and maintain harmony between returning diaspora members and local communities.
