Tensions between the Alliance of Sahel States and France have reached a fresh low after military authorities in the region formally accused France of masterminding recent failed coup attempts and destabilisation plots in West Africa.

Addressing the allegations on Rise and Shine, Political Scientist and conflict resolution expert Dr David Matsanga pointed to deep-seated friction between Western powers and Sahelian nations over national sovereignty, economic independence, and military interference. His comments follow televised statements from military officials in Niamey and Ouagadougou linking foreign intelligence networks to recent armed mutinies aimed at overthrowing the junta-led administrations.

Matsanga argued that African governments must move away from imported Western constitutional models and reliance on international financial institutions. Instead, he urged regional leaders to prioritise national reconciliation, political redemption, and complete economic self-reliance, including centralising and retaining physical gold reserves domestically to insulate national currencies from external shocks.
