SAHPRA has issued a warning over the sale of children’s supplements

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has issued a warning over the sale of children’s supplements containing zinc picolinate and selenium, citing serious safety concerns.

SAHPRA says these ingredients are not permitted in health products for anyone under 18, as they can cause side effects such as indigestion, diarrhea, headache, nausea, and vomiting. The products are currently marketed as immune boosters aimed at treating colds, flu, diarrhoea, and skin conditions.

“The sale of medicines containing zinc picolinate or selenium intended for children must be withdrawn from the market,” SAHPRA’s Tammy Gopal said. Members of the public are urged to return such products to their pharmacist, supplier, or distributor.
