The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has cautioned the public against purchasing weight loss medicines online, advising consumers to buy only from accredited pharmacies.
The regulator’s warning comes after it discovered a number of companies marketing products without authorisation and falsely claiming SAHPRA approval.
“Many of these products are shipped from outside SA and wrongly claim to be authorised locally,” said SAHPRA Spokesperson Yuven Gounden. “The sale, distribution and advertising of medicines not registered with SAHPRA is taken very seriously.”
SAHPRA confirmed it will take legal action against anyone found selling these unauthorised products.
The authority urged consumers to check that any medicine they purchase is registered and to avoid online vendors that are not accredited, in order to protect their health and safety.
