The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has raised concern over the proliferation of illicit medication in the country.

It says organised criminal syndicates are flooding the SA market with fake medicines which include weight loss injections, antibiotics, painkillers and medications used for chronic illnesses such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

It says it will be embarking on a national awareness campaign aimed at dismantling the illicit market, removing unauthorised products and ensuring that patients know how to safely access approved medicines.
