São Tomé and Príncipe is grappling with a prolonged energy and water crisis

São Tomé and Príncipe is grappling with a prolonged energy and water crisis, as frequent electricity outages and limited access to clean water continue to disrupt daily life, public services and the wider economy.

The situation has worsened following the suspension of a contract with Tesla STP, amid allegations of unpaid debts and irregularities. Since then, the government has pledged to resolve the crisis, but many of those promises have yet to materialise.

Residents have been left struggling with unreliable power and water supplies, placing additional pressure on households and businesses already dealing with economic challenges.

The growing frustration has led to an increase in public protests, raising concerns about the government’s ability to respond effectively and restore essential services.

Political analyst Liberato Moniz says the crisis reflects deeper structural issues, including governance challenges and long-standing weaknesses in infrastructure.
