São Tomé and Príncipe is preparing to hold legislative, municipal, and regional elections on September 27th to fill 55 seats in the National Assembly, with over 146 000 voters registered to participate.

The campaign comes shortly after the country’s July presidential elections, which were marked by a high voter abstention rate of 58.81%. Major political parties are framing their campaigns around governance, economic stability, employment creation, judicial reform, energy security, and social protection.

Speaking on the political climate, Sao Tomean political analyst Liberato Moniz noted that restoring public confidence in democratic institutions remains a central challenge, as political parties must actively engage voters to overcome widespread turnout fatigue ahead of the national vote.
