The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo Province says it will continue to strengthen its skill set by recruiting more female artisans to work in its mechanical field.
It currently has 11 women working as vehicle mechanics in its seven vehicle servicing workshops across the province.
Traditionally, the profession was dominated by men.
Constable Kgabo Nakeng is one of the only eleven female mechanics within the SAPS in Limpopo.
She joined the service in 2020 as an artisan in Kimberly, Northern Cape Province before moving to Limpopo in 2025.
Armed with qualifications in both electrical and mechanical engineering, Nakeng has become a key figure in the SAPS mechanical department.
Her jobs entail servicing state vehicles, including armoured vehicles, component overhauls and fixing electrical faults.
Nakeng says the love and passion for her job keep her motivated amid numerous challenges.
“I feel very honoured because this normalises that excellent work in the workshop doesn’t come with gender, it just comes from within and you just have to be content with yourself, know what you are doing and be proud of your work.”
