South Africa’s (SA) African National Congress (ANC) party is adamant that its leadership, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, will complete its term in 2027
This follows speculation of attempts to oust Ramaphosa after the G20 Leaders Summit. A letter is reported to be circulating among senior ANC members in the Eastern Cape province, calling for the removal of Ramaphosa. It also says the executive should be disbanded and replaced with a national task team which former party President, Thabo Mbeki should lead. Ramaphosa’s closing remarks to the ANC executive meeting yesterday were closed to the media, fuelling speculation that he wanted to address the matter candidly. Acting ANC Spokesperson, Nonceba Mhlauli says as far the party is concerned, there is no departure in the executive.
“This executive with its President was elected in December 2022 and our terms ends in December 2027 and our term will end with Ramphosa as the President of the ANC where he will then be handing over. There is no departure lounge, President Ramaphosa is the president of the ANC and his term ends in 2027 in the ANC and whatever other rumours we cannot speak for or verify for any other reason,” she said.
