The SA squad arrived on Friday afternoon following a three-hour bus journey, with substitutes and players who did not complete the full match in their opening fixture immediately taking to the training pitch. The focus has now shifted to recovery and tactical adjustments after the team’s narrow defeat in their first game.
Head Coach Hugo Broos has begun refining his strategy ahead of the second group match, placing strong emphasis on improving attacking play and securing maximum points. SA currently sit at the bottom of Group A with zero points, level with Czechia, who have a slightly better goal difference after their 2–1 loss to South Korea.
With only the top two teams in each group guaranteed progression to the round of 32, and a limited number of third-placed teams also advancing, the upcoming fixture is critical for Bafana’s chances of continuing in the tournament.
Training intensity increased quickly, with Broos issuing firm instructions during the opening stages of Friday’s session, stressing the need for focus and discipline within the squad.
Speaking after the opening defeat, Broos expressed confidence that his players would recover both physically and mentally in time for the next match.
“You know, there’s still seven days, those guys are professionals. If you can’t recuperate in seven days for another game, that will be ridiculous,” Broos said.
“I think we need the next two days to get over the disappointment and also the fatigue. But from Saturday and Sunday, the guys will be ready again to have good training, and also we have to work on our offensive game, because it was not enough in this game.”
The team is expected to use the coming days to fine-tune tactics and improve attacking efficiency, which was identified as a key weakness in their opening performance.
SA will depart for Atlanta on Tuesday, where they will face Czechia at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday, in what is effectively a decisive fixture for both sides.
