South Africa’s (SA) Black Business Council (BBC) has criticised Business Unity SA (BUSA) for failing to include local and marginalised business formations at the B20 Summit, held alongside the G20 to shape the global economic agenda.

The B20 Summit serves as the official G20 dialogue platform with the global business community, focusing on economic growth, sustainability and inclusive prosperity, themes the BBC says cannot be realised without broader representation.

President of the BBC, Elias Monage, said the exclusion of township, rural and informal-sector businesses undermines the summit’s stated commitment to inclusivity.

“Our colleagues from BUSA have missed the bus because they’ve excluded a number of business formations in the country, and they’ve excluded a number of business formations on the continent, despite the fact that one of the anchor themes is inclusivity. We cannot talk about inclusivity but continue excluding marginalised businesses. Businesses in the township, in the rural areas and in the informal sector must be part of the conversation of this task force,” Monage said.
