COSATU is pressing ahead with its 15th National Congress

Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is pressing ahead with its 15th National Congress despite a legal challenge, as the federation attempts to complete unfinished business from last month’s collapsed gathering.

Spokesperson Zanele Sabela says more than 18 00 delegates are reconvening from today until Wednesday, with the election of new office bearers among the key items on the agenda.

The September congress was abandoned after disputes over delegate credentials and internal tensions prevented it from forming a quorum.

A recent attempt by aggrieved unions to interdict the reconvened congress was dismissed for lack of urgency, but the dispute is likely to keep the spotlight on unity and leadership stability within SA’s largest trade union federation.
