South Africa’s (SA) Electoral Commission says it is fine-tuning its systems and processes to provide voters with a smoother and more efficient experience ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections.
The Commission expects the polls to be among the most competitive in the country’s democratic history, with more than 100 000 candidates set to contest around 10 000 municipal council seats across the country. Officials say the scale of participation underscores both growing political engagement and the complexity of administering the elections.
Alongside its election preparations, the Commission has also reflected on several key issues it dealt with during 2025. These include proposed electoral amendments related to the Political Party Funding Act, efforts to consolidate public input on the possible introduction of electronic voting, and measures introduced to address challenges encountered during previous elections.
The Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering elections that are free, fair and credible, while continuing to strengthen systems in response to lessons learned and evolving electoral demands.
