South Africa’s (SA) former Chief Justice Raymond Zondo says the country must urgently shift from investigating corruption to enforcing direct legal and administrative consequences against individuals found guilty of unethical conduct.
Speaking at a public administration conference in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, the former chair of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture highlighted that SA continues to struggle with severe institutional weaknesses despite robust constitutional safeguards and comprehensive commission findings.
Zondo highlighted that public trust in state institutions will remain compromised until law enforcement agencies and government departments systematically prosecute implicated officials, recover stolen public assets, and implement recommended structural reforms to prevent systemic corruption.
