Former South African (SA) Police Minister Bheki Cele is expected to appear before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee over the next two days. The committee was established following allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference in the criminal justice system made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Cele, who served as Police Minister from February 2018 to June 2024, would have overseen the operations of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) during his tenure.
The same task team was later disbanded on December 31, 2024 by Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave.
On Wednesday, Mchunu told African National Congress Member of Member of Parliament, Khusela Diko that his predecessor did not provide any handover notes regarding the PKTT. He said, “Not as I read it. What was there was reference to committees the minister was serving on, not necessarily the PKTT in any form.” When asked why Cele did not shut down the unit himself, Mchunu replied, “Not really, we didn’t delve into that matter.”
