South Africa moves to take over Oprah Winfrey Girls Academy

Administrative processes are underway to transfer the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls to the Gauteng Department of Education in South Africa (SA), with the full handover expected at the end of the 2027 academic year.

The transition follows the announcement by media mogul Oprah Winfrey that the academy will cease operating as a single boarding school campus after nearly two decades, making way for an expanded nationwide scholarship programme to support learners across SA.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile confirmed that current learners will continue to receive support throughout the handover, while expressing sincere appreciation for Winfrey’s contribution to education.

Gauteng Department of Education Spokesperson Onwabile Lubhelwana stated that the transition process is progressing well and will preserve the academy’s legacy of academic excellence, leadership development, and expanding opportunities for young South African girls.
