South Africa’s (SA) Department of Home Affairs says pressure at the repatriation centre near the Beitbridge Border Post is beginning to ease as authorities accelerate the deportation of undocumented migrants.
According to Limpopo Home Affairs Provincial Manager Albert Matsaung, 73 buses carrying migrants were dispatched to Zimbabwe and Malawi on Sunday, significantly reducing the number of people at the facility to below 2 000.
The operation forms part of a broader effort to process and repatriate undocumented foreign nationals from across the country, with more buses arriving from Western Cape Province and additional groups expected from Limpopo Province and other provinces.
Officials hope to send a further 60 buses today as they work to clear backlogs and prevent overcrowding at the centre, which has become a key transit point in one of SA’s largest recent repatriation drives.
Recent figures from border authorities show that thousands of undocumented migrants have already been processed through the Beitbridge corridor in recent weeks.
