IEB has praised the matriculants of 2025 after the class achieved an impressive overall pass rate of 98.31%

South Africa’s (SA) Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has praised the matriculants of 2025 after the class achieved an impressive overall pass rate of 98.31%, slightly lower than the 98.47% recorded by the class of 2024.

The IEB noted that the marginal decline comes amid a significant increase in the number of candidates sitting the examinations, highlighting the sustained quality of performance despite the growing cohort.

More than 17 000 learners wrote the IEB matric exams this year. Of these, 89.12% qualified for entry into degree studies, while 7.83% met the requirements for diploma programmes. A further 1.34% obtained eligibility for higher certificate programmes, and a very small fraction, 0.02%, received an endorsed National Senior Certificate.

The board said the results reflect the hard work of both learners and educators, while also demonstrating the IEB’s continued commitment to maintaining high academic standards in private schooling across SA.
