Electoral Commission of South Africa is sharpening its tools
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (SA) (IEC) is sharpening its tools to ensure that it gives the electorate an improved voting experience in the upcoming Local Government Elections.
The local polls are expected to be the most hotly contested elections with over 100 000 candidates vying for 10 000 municipal seats.
Whilst the IEC is busy preparing for the polls, it also reflected on a number of issues it was faced with in 2025.
These include Electoral amendments pertaining to the political party funding act, consolidating public feedback on e-voting and the interventions put in place to mitigate the challenges experienced in the previous elections amongst others.
The 2025 might have not been an election year, however, the IEC had its hands full with a number of issues.
In March, the Commission held a first of its kind e-voting conference on the feasibility and policy implications of electronic voting in the country.
The conference resolved that e-voting will not be implemented in the 2026 local government elections but set out a six-month period for public inputs and consultations on the discussion documents on e-voting that will eventually be sent to Parliament.
