Dhlamini says the IFP has consistently stood for issues that were unpopular at the time but are now important.
Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Gauteng Chairperson Bonginkosi Dhlamini says South Africa’s (SA) current immigration challenges could have been addressed earlier.
Dhlamini says former SA Home Affairs Minister and IFP leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi had pushed for migration legislation that could have prevented the problems the country is facing today.
He says the legislation was not supported at the time because it was not politically fashionable.
Dhlamini was speaking ahead of a meeting with residents of Madala Hostel in Alexandra, where he reflected on the current anti-immigration protests.
Dhlamini says the IFP has consistently stood for issues that were unpopular at the time but are now important.
“When our late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi was the Minister of Home Affairs, he piloted a legislation, migration legislation, which, if the African National Congress and others had listened to him then, which was not fashionable, would not have the problem we are having today of uncontrolled immigration in our country and the influx of illegal immigrants in the country. Therefore, they can trust us because we always respect the task given to us by history to us. It’s not fashionable,” adds Dhlamini.
