South African (SA) Jayden Schaper won the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Sunday after sinking an eagle putt on the first playoff hole to defeat compatriot Shaun Norris and secure his maiden DP World Tour victory.

The 24-year-old played a superb second shot out of the bunker to the edge of the green before rolling in a three-metre putt on the 18th hole to clinch the title at Royal Johannesburg.

Defending champion Norris had earlier fired a course-record 62 to finish level with Schaper on 16-under-par, with a three-round total of 198 in the rain-curtailed tournament.

Saturday’s play was largely washed out, forcing the event to be reduced to three rounds. Despite overcast conditions, the field was able to complete the tournament on Sunday.

Schaper, who finished second at last week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge, said: “I’ve come close so many times, so to finally get it done at home is unreal and awesome.”

Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra, who led after the first two rounds, finished third, one shot behind, after carding a 70 on Sunday.

South Africans Oliver Bekker, Christiaan Burke and Louis Oosthuizen were tied for fourth place on 13-under-par.
