City of Johannesburg is working to resolve its dispute with SA power utility Eskom over mounting debt

City of Johannesburg Mayor, Dada Morero says the city is working to resolve its dispute with South African (SA) power utility Eskom over mounting debt.

Eskom recently warned that it could reduce or completely cut electricity supply to certain bulk areas after the city and City Power accumulated arrears exceeding $313.6 million, excluding an additional $90.4 million due next month.

Morero acknowledged the seriousness of the issue but said Johannesburg was committed to working with national authorities and stakeholders to find a solution.

“We will not fight Eskom. We will work with the Minister of Electricity and Energy and the SA Local Government Association to resolve this challenge,” Morero said.

He added that City Power has already developed a turnaround strategy aimed at addressing the debt crisis and stabilising electricity services.
