Residents in the northern border town of Musina, located in South Africa’s (SA) Limpopo Province, have openly welcomed a decision by the Department of Home Affairs to halt the intake of new asylum-seeker applications.
The move comes after the local Home Affairs facility processed hundreds of asylum seekers within a matter of days, putting immense pressure on local infrastructure in one of SA’s busiest transit corridors. The massive surge sparked growing safety concerns among local community members, who expressed relief over the temporary suspension.
Community members are now calling on SA’s Parliament to hold broader national consultations, urging lawmakers to give citizens a voice as they work to reform migration policies and manage illegal border crossings into the country.
