Commissioner Sandile Khumalo has raised concerns at the Madlanga Commission in South Africa (SA) that top police officials appear to have close relations with members of criminal syndicates.
His comments follow suspended head of Organised Crime, Major-General Richard Shibiri’s testimony that he and attempted murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala had a cordial relationship.
Shibiri has testified Matlala lent him thousands to fix his son’s vehicle. Advocate Khumalo asked Shibiri to place himself in the shoes of families who have lost loved ones to crime.
Khumalo says, “Now, if you are family members of all these crime victims and you are listening to the evidence that the Commission is hearing that the head of organised crime in the country and some very Senior Generals, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, are actually good friends with these people alleged to have committed these crimes what confidence would you have in the police if you were the families of these victims? What confidence would you have in the police?”
