South Africa’s (SA) mining sector picked up momentum in January, with production rising 4.6% year-on-year, according to Statistics SA.
The increase was driven mainly by strong output in platinum group metals, chromium ore and manganese ore, which together contributed 5.5 percentage points to the overall growth.
Other commodities, including gold and uranium, also recorded positive results, while production of copper, nickel, iron ore, coal and building materials declined compared with January 2025.
On a month-to-month basis, seasonally adjusted mining production rebounded by 2.9%, showing a steady recovery for the sector, says Stats SA Principal Survey Statistician Juan-Pierre Terblanche.
The growth highlights the continued importance of SA’s mineral resources in supporting the national economy, despite some setbacks in key bulk minerals.
