Former South African (SA) parliamentarian Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has called on member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to unite to achieve true economic emancipation across the region.
Ndlozi was speaking at the Samora Machel symposium at Rhodes University in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, held to mark 40 years since the passing of Mozambique’s founding president and liberation icon. The two-day event brought together liberation veterans, scholars, and youth representatives from across the continent.
Addressing delegates, Ndlozi urged Southern African nations to pull together massive capital investments and modernise their economies to drive growth and attract meaningful foreign investment.
“South Africans and Zimbabweans will not be able to matter in an economy that is isolated. We cannot go back to the 19th century, nor can we return to the Kingdom of Shaka, you will perish,” Ndlozi said. “A true economic emancipation programme has to reimagine this region. We need a pulling together of massive capital investments.”
