The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) in South Africa’s ( SA) has welcomed the appointment of Advocate Andy Mothibi as the new National Director of Public Prosecutions, citing that he is a better candidate than all those who were shortlisted
The Presidency announced the appointment on Tuesday night. Mothibi’s appointment will take effect on the first of next month, coinciding with the end of the current head, Shamila Batohi’s tenure. OUTA Chief Executive Officer, Wayne Duvenage says Mothibi has the much needed leadership skills that he believes Batohi lacked.
“We can see that Mothibi has a lot of that in place, especially the successes in the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The question, though, is going to be are we going to see visible senior prosecutions within months. There’s a lot of information, by the way, and cases and affidavits that SIU themselves have had built and forwarded onto the prosecuting authority. So he’s going to be able to take those up and we need to see action now because our disappointment in the NPA has fumbled cases, unprepared cases, and a lack of action. And getting advancing those matters that should have been in court a long time ago. And here we’re talking about the architects of state capture and the kingpins there.” he said.
