South African (SA) weightlifter Johanni Taljaard admits falling just short of a Commonwealth Games medal was difficult to accept after finishing fourth in the women’s 58kg division in Scotland. The 41-year-old missed out on bronze by just three points but remained proud to have represented the country on the international stage. Speaking after the competition, Taljaard conceded she was below her best on the day, yet took encouragement from another strong performance at the Games.

“Unfortunately, in weightlifting, the smallest margin can make all the difference. I just wasn’t sharp enough today. I think the nerves got the better of me. I felt a bit shaky, and although I kept telling myself to stay focused, I just couldn’t switch myself on. It’s sad to come so close and feel the medal slipping through your hands, but it is what it is,” says Taljaard.
