South Africa’s (SA) National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola is back at the helm of the SA Police Service (SAPS) after six-month precautionary suspension.
He says his return is an opportunity to restore stability, unite the police service and reinforce its commitment to the rule of law.
Masemola was suspended in April after being charged with alleged contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act linked to a controversial police healthcare tender involving businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The charges were formally withdrawn in September after prosecutors concluded there was no reasonable prospect of a successful prosecution.
His return comes as the SAPS faces continuing scrutiny over corruption, alleged criminal infiltration and the integrity of its leadership.
