The United Civic Movements in South Africa (SA) which is an umbrella body representing 21 civic organisations, says communities have the right to act against undocumented migrants through citizen’s arrests.

The organisation made the remarks during a media briefing held in response to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent comments warning SA citizens against taking the law into their own hands when dealing with illegal migration.

The group says illegal migration is placing pressure on jobs and public services and is calling for stronger enforcement measures while demanding that all undocumented migrants leave the country.

Convener and President of the Progressive Forces, Mthetho Nqcukaitobi, says communities are entitled to carry out citizen’s arrests under the Criminal Procedure Act.
