Scholars, political thinkers, and family members of the late Mozambique’s President Samora Machel have gathered at Rhodes University in Makhanda, South Africa (SA), to examine the ongoing struggles facing Africa’s liberation project.
The two-day symposium comes 40 years after the death of Mozambique’s first post-independence leader, who remains a towering figure in the continent’s anti-colonial history.
Attendees, including human rights advocate Graça Machel and former African National Congress veteran Mavuso Msimang, are reflecting on Machel’s political legacy while tackling present-day challenges across Southern Africa, from economic inequality to political governance.
Delegates noted that the meeting is not merely a memorial, but an opportunity to confront the social and economic promises of independence that remain unfulfilled across the region today.
