Malawi’s national women’s football team, also known as the Scorchers, continued their fairy-tale run at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 3-1 semi-final victory over Algeria in Rabat.
Tabitha Chawinga opened the scoring with a spectacular overhead kick before Temwa doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time. Despite Rose Kadzere’s red card and Ikram Adjabi pulling one back for Algeria, Tabitha struck again to seal the Scorchers’ place in Sunday’s final.
The debutants have already stunned Nigeria and Ghana and now stand one game away from becoming only the fourth nation to lift the WAFCON trophy. They will face either hosts Cameroon in the final.
