Senegal has officially nominated Birame Diop for the Presidency of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission.
Diop, a former Chief of Defence Staff and current Minister of the Armed Forces, is being presented by Dakar as an experienced candidate capable of helping steer the regional bloc through a challenging period.
The announcement comes ahead of the ECOWAS summit of heads of state and government scheduled for July 2026, as the organisation seeks to strengthen its authority following the departures of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the bloc.
Political analyst and journalist Keita Idrissa says the nomination is likely to play a significant role in shaping discussions about the future direction of ECOWAS and regional integration in West Africa.
