Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The decision was finalised on Sunday during the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government held in Lungi, Sierra Leone.

Faye’s appointment is part of the regular rotation of the regional bloc’s leadership structure. Taking over the mantle for a one-year term, Faye steps into leadership at a critical time, with the West African region currently facing severe security, political, and economic challenges.
