Refugees at Malawi’s camp face severe food shortages and overcrowding

Refugees residing at the Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi are facing severe humanitarian conditions and critical food shortages, driven by funding cuts and severe overcrowding.

In an interview with reporter Abedi Jean de La Croix, camp resident Ally Musangwa detailed the daily struggles facing the population. Musangwa highlighted that reduced food rations and a lack of economic opportunities have left thousands of aid-dependent families in a precarious position.

Located roughly 40 kilometres from the capital city of Lilongwe, the Dzaleka camp was originally established to accommodate around 10 000 individuals. However, the facility currently houses more than 50 000 refugees and asylum seekers, far exceeding its intended capacity. The majority of the population comprises nationals from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda.
