South African (SA) Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga says a shutdown is not the answer to the current Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) crisis facing the country
While attending the 12th “CEO Dialogue on Southern Africa” in Johannesburg on Thursday, Chikunga told Channel Africa that fighting this scourge is not government’s responsibility alone. This comes as the Non- governmental Organisation, Women For Change, is set to lead the G20 Women’s Shutdown, just a day before the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. Women and members of the LGBTQI+ community across SA are expected to refrain from all paid and unpaid work, in workplaces, universities, homes, and communities, to demonstrate the economic and social impact of their absence. The action demands urgent recognition of the country’s GBVF crisis as a National Disaster.
“More women are killed in SA, they are raped and they are violated and our our prevalence study confirmed that one in three women will have had and been exposed to gender based violence in SA. Be it a sexual, physical, emotional or even financial and therefore we agree we have got a problem of data based violence in SA and we understand anyone who raises the issue of gender based violence and femicide. We still think that we can deal with it differently other than maybe a shutdown,” she said.
