Department of International Relations and Co-operation (DIRCO) has urged South African (SA) citizens currently in the Middle East to immediately take advantage of the limited commercial flights still available to leave the region.
The department said heavy attacks are expected to continue in the coming days, increasing safety risks for foreign nationals in the region. South Africans have been advised to contact consular support services through the contact details listed on the DIRCO website.
DIRCO also reported a sharp increase in South Africans registering on its Travel Smart system. More than 6 400 South Africans have now registered their presence in Middle Eastern countries as security concerns continue to rise.
Authorities have encouraged citizens to stay alert, monitor official travel advisories and maintain regular communication with family members while making arrangements to leave affected areas as soon as possible.
