South Sudan updates centuries of old customary laws
South Sudan’s centuries-old customary laws are being updated for the first time since 1942.
The Naath law, used across Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states, has been revised after wide consultations with Chiefs, community leaders, and women’s groups.
The reforms introduce a cap on dowries, recognition of child rights, and the abolition of forced marriages.
These efforts are with legal support from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
