South Africa’s (SA) Springbok Sevens took sweet revenge on Fiji in Perth, Australia on Sunday, edging the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Sevens Series leaders 21-19 at HBF Park.
This is the Blitzboks’ first title on Australian soil since 2017, when they won in Sydney.
SA led 14-12 at half-time but fell behind early in the second half. Fiji, last weekend’s Singapore champions, were ahead by five points with just four minutes left. The Blitzboks fought back to snatch victory in a thrilling finish.
The win marks SA’s second title of the season and leaves them just four points behind series leaders Fiji ahead of the final North American leg. The team now prepares for Vancouver on March 7 and 8, where they will face New Zealand’s All Blacks Sevens, Spain, and Great Britain at BC Place Stadium, aiming for a spot in the semifinals in Canada.
