Sudan envoy marks one year of siege in El Fasher with urgent call for humanitarian aid

Sudan’s Ambassador to South Africa (SA), Uthman Abu Musa Muhammad, has called on SA, the African Union, and the international community to demand accountability for atrocities committed in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, marking one year since the city fell under siege by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Muhammad highlighted the ongoing human catastrophe in North Darfur, where survivors continue to suffer from mass displacement, psychological trauma, and widespread sexual violence targeting women and girls. United Nations (UN) Human Rights Office documentation indicates that over 6 000 civilians were killed within the first three days of the RSF assault on the city, though officials warn the actual death toll is substantially higher.

He urged international stakeholders to step up humanitarian assistance, specifically funding for safe shelter, clean water, medical supplies, and psychosocial support, while pressing for unhindered access to vulnerable populations across Darfur. He highlighted that lasting relief requires immediate civilian protection alongside formal legal accountability, noting that Sudan’s national investigative committee, chaired by the Attorney General, has submitted evidence of violations to the UN Human Rights Council.

The appeal also targeted foreign interference in the conflict, urging SA to leverage its diplomatic influence to help cut off external flows of weaponry, funding, and foreign mercenaries to the RSF.
